One
of the movements from the Cascadia Suite, it includes
themes written originally for the 1994 Commonwealth
Games held in Victoria, BC.
The first Part of the suite, Cascadia saluted the grandeur of the mountains of
the same name. Cathedral Grove takes us 1nto the stillness of the aboreal forest
with the ferns and salal underfoot and the over-arching majesty of the giants
of the forest. |

| This
award winning composition, a tone poem, was written to
celebrate the beauty of the Pacific North West region
of the United States and Canada. The opening theme’s
energetic air brings to mind the busy coastal ports and
cities. A sensitive clarinet solo slows the pace right
down to the stillness of a quiet lagoon or lake. The
piece finishes with a soaring orchestral theme echoing
the drama and majesty of the mountainous coastal fjords
and the Rockies. |

With
the possible exception of the universe itself nothing
is singular. All we know, and sense, and feel is
made up of the interplay between matter and energy,
time and space, light and dark. In this piece the
composer immerses us in this complex, interdependent,
multifaceted world, a world of shadows and light…..Shadow
Play
The
soul of the work lies in the superb Soprano Sax (or clarinet)
solo. Early reports indicate that both young and older players
enjoy this very original work. The interplay between the instruments
is quite subtle and the players gain great satisfaction in hearing
their parts weave into the texture of the piece. One school’s
band conductor noted that the students loved it because it was
completely and utterly different from anything else that they
had ever played, and this coming from a band that sight-read
140 numbers a year, was no small praise.
Shadow Play was written for and first performed by the North Shore Concert Band
in Vancouver, Canada in 2003. It was first recorded on their CD, Fiesta Pacifica
in 2004 which is available through the band at their website.. |

| ReBoot
was the first network TV series produced entirely with
computer graphics. Created by Mainframe Entertainment
in Vancouver it premiered in the USA in 1994 and has
been shown in 70 countries around the world. It was the
#1 kids show on television in North America, Europe,
and Asia for several years. The movie of the same name
has just been released in the video stores and this music
should be extremely popular with musicians of all ages. |

Is My Home – by

In
1986 twenty two million people visited Expo 86 in Vancouver.
The centrepiece of the fair was the Canadian Pavilion
and when people first entered the building they were
brought into a large multi-media theatre where they were
treated to the presentation “This Is My Home”.
Images of Canada-the land, its icons and its people flashed
around the room and over-all soared the strains of “This
is my Home”.
It
has become an unofficial second anthem of sorts and is played
annually on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Canada day with full
symphony and a massive choir. This concert band arrangement is
true to the symphonic original and with singers and choir it
is a stirring work guaranteed to be a climax to any Canadian
assembly.
A choir with male and female soloists is required. The optional children’s
choir can, of course, be performed by the main choir. |

March – by

|
| Not
surprisingly, the piece was written in 2000
to celebrate the new millennium. It was first
performed by the Douglas College Band in
New Westminster and the North Shore Concert
Band in North Vancouver, Canada. The composer,
Bob Buckley, plays many instruments including
keyboards, soprano and alto saxophone, and
clarinet. This march reflects his love of
the clarinet. The clarinet and flute players
will find their fingers flying in this fast
paced composition. A favourable key signature
makes light work of it all and reflects the
composer’s knowledge of the instrument.
There are fine soli between clarinets and
baritone in a traditional march style at
bar 66. The rest of the band should find
the music entertaining but not overtaxing. |

Tusk March – by

This
composition marks quite a departure from
the Latin rhythms that we have seen in the
past from David in his jazz compositions
and in his earlier concert band arrangement
of The Milagro Beanfield War Suite.
Here
we have a bright and energetic conventionally styled march. Inspiration
came from the hustle and bustle of the slopes of Black Tusk and
the busy Whistler scene. Black Tusk Mountain is one of the 7,000
foot mountains that looms over the village that will be the site
of the 2010 Winter Olympics. |
